The first two days featured papers proposed by IASE while the third day involved representatives of IAOS as well as IASE.

Its objective is to gather during three days teachers and researchers of the following disciplines: statistics obviously, but also mathematics, education sciences, engineering of knowledge, didactic of statistics and data processing. We should also not forget about the different disciplines that are using statistical tools, in the field of exact sciences as well as in that of social or health sciences, nor the companies which have to ensure the training of their staff on the statistical techniques. This conference aims to be a meeting and an exchange place for the actors in charge of the training of both young and adult people, and this to any level: obligatory and higher education, but also the continuing education.

Leading-edge products will be showcased. A review of technical solutions (e.g. Flash, video) are expected to be made and participants will have the opportunity to participate in discussions on how to select, develop and implement excellent solutions, as well as engaging and thought-provoking applications of statistics. Statistics educators are considering the possibilities of reaching students via webcast, podcasts, ipods, and other modern technologies. This seminar will be of high interest to them because those technologies, their successes and limitations in conveying stories behind data will be showcased in an intensive two days of brainstorming.

19 Jul - 16 Aug 2004Resampling MethodsThe workshop introduces the basic concepts and methods of statistics via resampling methods (bootstrap, permutation). All sessions include critical appraisal methodology and exercises. Participants will learn to do interval estimation, one- , two- and k-sample comparisons, correlation, and a number of other most-powerful statistical procedures. The goal of the course is to give participants the confidence and tools necessary for the practice of statistics in their own research and in interpreting the research of others. Instructor: Dr. Phillip Good, author of “Resampling Methods” (Birkhauser). There are no specific daily hours - interaction takes place on a discussion board.

Mathematics, like art, like music and literature, and like life itself, has the power to make us happy by means of our personal creativity and openness, and through our own personal resolution of what is decidable, and what is undecidable, not only in mathematics and not only in mathematics education, but in life itself.
