8 - 9 December, 20169th OZCOTS, Canberra, AustraliaThe 9th Australian Conference on Teaching Statistics (OZCOTS) will be held 8-9 December, 2016, in Canberra, Australia, and will consider many challenges of teaching Statistics for future statisticians, statistical users and consumers under the theme of “Statistics Education in a Big Data Era”. OZCOTS 2016 is again building on the success of the timing and format of OZCOTS 2008, 2010 and 2012 as a conjoint event with the (ASC) with an overlap on Thursday 8th December.

These are themed conferences held immediately before the ISI World Statistics Congresses. In 2013, the satellite was held 22-24 August, with the theme “Statistics Education for Progress”, and with the special sub-theme on 24th August of “Statistics Education for Progress: Youth and Official Statistics”. The first two days featured papers proposed by IASE while the third day involved representatives of IAOS as well as IASE.

08 - 10 Sep 2010Deuxième colloque francophone international sur l’enseignement de la statistique (CFIES’2010)This scientific manifestation is organized under the aegis of the Société Française de Statistique (SFdS). Its objective is to gather during three days teachers and researchers of the following disciplines: statistics obviously, but also mathematics, education sciences, engineering of knowledge, didactic of statistics and data processing. We should also not forget about the different disciplines that are using statistical tools, in the field of exact sciences as well as in that of social or health sciences, nor the companies which have to ensure the training of their staff on the statistical techniques. This conference aims to be a meeting and an exchange place for the actors in charge of the training of both young and adult people, and this to any level: obligatory and higher education, but also the continuing education.

15 - 16 Jul 2009Seminar on Innovative Approaches to Turn Statistics Information into KnowledgeThe seminar is about the art of making statistics understandable and appealing to modern audiences to increase the statistical literacy of the general public. Leading-edge products will be showcased. A review of technical solutions (e.g. Flash, video) are expected to be made and participants will have the opportunity to participate in discussions on how to select, develop and implement excellent solutions, as well as engaging and thought-provoking applications of statistics. Statistics educators are considering the possibilities of reaching students via webcast, podcasts, ipods, and other modern technologies. This seminar will be of high interest to them because those technologies, their successes and limitations in conveying stories behind data will be showcased in an intensive two days of brainstorming.

The main goal of MWM is to enhance statistics education within the math/science curriculum using active learning, real-world data, technology, and statistical concepts embodied in the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education Pre-K-12 Curriculum Framework.

All sessions include critical appraisal methodology and exercises. Participants will learn to do interval estimation, one- , two- and k-sample comparisons, correlation, and a number of other most-powerful statistical procedures. The goal of the course is to give participants the confidence and tools necessary for the practice of statistics in their own research and in interpreting the research of others. Instructor: Dr. Phillip Good, author of “Resampling Methods” (Birkhauser). There are no specific daily hours - interaction takes place on a discussion board.

The importance of his work, in freeing mathematics from the alluring but simplistic idea that all mathematics can be deduced from a few logical axioms, cannot be overestimated. Mathematics, like art, like music and literature, and like life itself, has the power to make us happy by means of our personal creativity and openness, and through our own personal resolution of what is decidable, and what is undecidable, not only in mathematics and not only in mathematics education, but in life itself.
