Professional Ethics for Statistical Practices

Date 12 Feb 2025
Time 20:00 - 21:30 in UTC

Ayse Bilgin , Macquarie University (Australia)
Teresita Terán , National University of Rosario (Argentina)

Ethics play an important role in the practice of all professions. Professional ethics for statistics is application-oriented and committed to the goal of guiding statistical practitioners to act responsibly and to ensure the trustworthiness of statisticians and thus also of the statistics they produce. Nevertheless, this practice-orientated approach is based on scientific concepts from the sociology of quantification and the philosophy of sciences. This webinar is about how education in statistics and data science can be complemented by relevant components. Questions of ethics often relate to difficult situations and trade-offs; answers are rarely or never just black or white, do or do not. For this reason, no cookery book is presented whose recipes are simply to be followed. Rather, we will take a brief look at the theoretical basis as well as the existing guidelines and the issues of promotion and knowledge transfer.
