John Harraway is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Otago, New Zealand. He is a previous President of IASE 2011-2013 and a member of the Advisory Panel for the International Statistical Literacy Project. He has taught large first year classes in the biological and health sciences, the social sciences and busines as well as advanced courses in modelling and multivariate statistics. His consultancies have lead to recent publications on dolphin behaviour, profiles of New Zealand women who would consume alcohol when pregnant, the multivariate analysis of trace element data for food authentication and the measurement of attitude changes of students to sustainability during their time at University. He has a particular interest in teaching appropriate advanced statistics techniques to researchers in other disciplines and teaching Official statistics to members of the Public Service and post graduate students. The data from the consultancies provide excellent motivational case studies for students.
